Unclog Your Nose Naturally (Two Ways)

Have you heard?

Breathing through your nose is an extremely important skill to maintain.

According to Healthline, nasal breathing's benefits include:

  • Filter out foreign particles.  Nasal hair filters out dust, allergens, and pollen, which helps prevent them from entering your lungs.
  • Humidify inhaled air. Your nose warms and moisturizes the air you breathe in. This brings the air you inhale to body temperature, making it easier for your lungs to use.
  • Produce nitric oxide. During nasal breathing, your nose releases nitric oxide (NO). NO is a vasodilator, which means it helps to widen blood vessels. This can help improve oxygen circulation in your body.

Whereas, mouth breathing can create awful side effects. Again, according to Healthline, some of the mouth breathing's harmful side effects include:

  • Inhaling unfiltered air
  • Allergic reactions
  • Asthma
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth decay
  • Gum inflammation
  • Snoring
  • Sleep apnea
  • Tooth or jaw abnormalities

Honestly, both lists could go on and on ... I suspect you get the idea.

But, what if you can't breathe through your nose?

Sometimes people can suffer from a deviated septum and nasal congestion. And how do you know which is which?

Shall I show you two techniques that may help?

Sway

Sit up tall in a place where you won't be disturbed.

Inhale through your nose, exhale through your nose, hold the exhale, and pinch your nose.

Gently sway left to right.

Repeat the swaying motion until you feel an urge to breathe.

When you feel the urge to breathe, come back to your starting position, release your nose, and breathe normally.

You'll need to repeat this several times until your nasal passages decongest. 

One of the reasons this technique works is because you're creating and storing nitric oxide in your nasal cavities. Nitric oxide helps open your nasal passages (among other positive things), so when you inhale after your breath hold, you take in a naturally occurring decongestant. 

The second technique ...

Hum

It is as it sounds, just hum.

Find a place where you will not be disturbed.

Sit up tall.

Inhale through your nose and while you exhale, hum.

That's it.

You can hum whenever or where ever you like until you feel relief from your clogged nose.

Do you remember the positive effects of nitric oxide? According to a study in 2002, humming increases nitric oxide production 15-fold.

If neither of these techniques helps, you may want to try a neti pot to remove any pollen or other debris that may be trapped in your nasal passages. This is the one I use.
